During the next few days another of the queens gave birth to a litter of nine. The poor cat was quite exhausted by the time the last one appeared, it had taken five hours. By the time the last two kittens were born, the first ones were rooting around to feed from their mother. Annie was concerned that the last two may be ignored, and when her fears looked set to become a reality, she made the decision to interfere and take the last two kittens away to try them with Megan, who was coping well with her own four babies. Annie gently rubbed the two tiny creatures with Megan’s bedding, and then laid them down beside her own kittens. The newcomers nuzzled in, rooting for food and Megan allowed them to suckle with her own brood, seemingly quite happy to enlarge her family.

“You are a good girl Megan!” she said gently, “Or is it that you can’t count?” Annie went in to put the kettle on for a well-deserved cup of tea and her thoughts turned, not for the first time, to James Bird. She began to imagine how he would share her pleasure at the success of the new litter and she felt he would think even more kindly of Megan too.
